ÖAbdalow, under ÖArdalow below.

AfianÆ. According to the MAKEDONIKO PRAKTOREIO EIDHSEVN [8 June

2000], as reported by Dr. Georgia Karametrou-Menteside [Dr. Gevrg€a KaramÆtrou-Mentes€dh], the excavator of Aiane, Mycenaean pottery has been brought to light at the cemetery in Aiane and that Mycenaean remains are present in more than 20 sites in the prefecture of Kozane (Kozãnh).

The presence of Mycenaean remains in Western Makedonia probably implies that the area west of the Axios river was Mycenaean or under Mycenaean influence, and this would explain why the area east of the Axios (Paiones-Thrakes) is found on the side of the Trojans (Homer, Iliad). This line of thought is in harmony with Aischylos, Iketides, where Pelasgos is said to have ruled the lands west of the Strymon river [ÉArx. ÉEfhm. 1993 (1995), 16 and 25, under O], although here the Strymon [farther to the east of Axios] delineates the Greek world. NOTE: Dr. Georgia Karametrou-Menteside informed this writer [per teleph., 26/8ou/00] that she has recovered Mycenaean swords at Aiane and that there are 22 known Mycenaean sites in the Nomos of Kozane.

AKULAS (AKULOS?)=ÉAkÊlaw, or ÖAkulow (?). The name ÉAkÊlaw/ÖAkulow (?)

is attested in an inscription from Vergina: Kle≈numow : ÉAkÊlou : ÜAdumow : KlevnÊ/mou : PeukÒlaow : ÑAdÊmou : Krin≈ : ÑAdÊmou [SEG 35 (1985='88), No. 787, of ca. 325 B.C.], and it appears to be traceable to Aquilo [ÉAkÊlvn, this writer] of Hygeinos 157 [=N.L. Collins, Mnemosyne 50.4 (1997) 449, under note 48], who is said to be the father of Chiona [Hygini Fabulae, ed. H.I. Rose (1934) 112, CLVII. NEPTVNI FILII: ….. (10) Eumolpus ex Chiona Aquilonis filia ….].

WAliow. A close examination of the name [20-9ou-2001, Aiane] seems to alter the reading

WAliow [greater elaboration later, 2-11ou-01].

ÖArdalow appears to be the correct reading [from photograph published therein] in place

of ÖAfdalow,Petsas, Ph. M., Hatzopoulos, Gounaropoulou, L., Paschidis, P., Inscriptions du sanctuaire de la Mere des Dieux Autochtone de Leukopetra (Macedoine) [MELETHMATA 28, Athens 2000], No. 55, line 1. The name displays the same root as ÖArduw and compares to ÖArdarow in SEG 45 (1995='98), under No. 978. M. B. Hatzopoulos retains ÖAfdalow = ÖAbdalow [per discussion].

B€low, B€la, Bil€sta, Bilist€xh, probably not from F€low, F€la, Fil€sta,

Filist€xh [though similar in appearance]; the root of the former four names is bil-, and it is probably an independent epichoric manifestation [other than fil-=bil-], if not from Wil-=bil- [Miltiades Hatzopoulos comments on this subject in BÉ 1999, 635, No. 336]. It is strange that so far the name F€lippow has not surfaced epigraphically as B€lippow [see this writer's marshalling of the evidence concerning the bil-=fil- element in the AncW 30.2 (1999) 122-127 (124, note 20)].

DETELA, see below, under TELA.

DION, under MAKEDONIKON HMEROLOGION below.

EÎia, pÒliw (?)=BE 1999, No. 325. The ephebic inscription found at Mikrokastro

(Siatista) [=Rizakis-Touratsouglou, Epigr. ãnv Makedon€aw (1985), No. 187, Pl. 74] may be from Euia, which must have had close connections with Berroia.

KUTAS=ÜArpalow KUTAS, BÉ 1999, 635, No. 336. The KUTAS may stand for

kÊtaw [=ko›taw]= (s)kÊtaw= (s)kÊdaw [=(s)ko›daw=sko›dow], from the Makedonian official sko›dow [cf. the AncW 30.2 (1999) 127, No. 23. If so hArpalos, then, was a sko›dow official, and probably he was honored by his sister Pagkãsta for this reason [ARPALOS KUTAS. ADELFH/ ME ANEYHKE PAGKASTA]. hArpalos could be ÑO peribÒhtow ÜArpalow, o tam€aw of Alexander [cf. Athenaios, 594e-596b] (a kenotãfion set up by his sister Pagkasta at Aigai?). Cf. SEG 45 (1995='98), No. 774, line 5: kunvn kÒpvn=koinvn kÒpvn, for u in KUTAS=KOITAS (from Kassandreia).

The hArpalos stele  can be viewed at the museum under the tÊmbow at Vergina [to the left of entrance].  This writer saw the stele on 4 Oct. 2001.

MAKEDONIKON HMEROLOGION.  DION.  ELEUYEROTUPIA, T°xnew,

03/11/2003, toË SAKH APOSTOLAKH [Online]: AnakalÊfyhke sto ierÒ tou Uc€stou DiÒw sto D€on / Sto fvw to MakedonikÒ HmerolÒgio. The inscription was found at the temple of DIOC UCICTOU [lines 1-2], and it records the twelve months of the Makedonian calendar.  Professor D. Pantermales who carries out the excavations at Dion announced the discovery of the inscription last Friday at Dion [at a meeting [=sun°drio] concerned with the bonds [=desmoÊw] between Dion and Alexandreia].  The small ELEUYEROTUPIA photograph shows nine lines of the inscription, beginning with AGAYH TUXH and ending with the name NEMECIANOC vacat.

MAKEDONIKO PRAKTOREIO EIDHSEVN, POLITISMOS, DEUTERA, 3 NOEMBRIOU 2003 [Online]: SPOUDAIO EURHMA STO DION / ANAKALUFYHKE STO DION PLAKA ME TO MAKEDONIKO HMEROLOGIO. The stele [=plãka], found last month, is dated to A.D. 251 (<<ellhnistikÆ per€odow>>). In the inscription there are recorded the twelve Makedonian months, with religious festivals associated with Zeus Hypsistos, and the names and position of those who sponsored the festivals.

SIRRAS: In the AncW 25.1 (1994) 9-14: Sirras, this writer has shown that the name

S€rraw [ÜIrraw] is Makedonian, and new evidence lends further support to the name's origin [Miltiade B. Hatzopoulos, BÉ 1999, 639, under No. 345]:

<Neik∆ S€rra> [Pella, under n. 8: Neikô fille de Sirras, (IIe-Ier s.a.C.)]

<EÈrud€ka S€rra> [under n. 8: <<Une nouvelle base portant le nom et le patronyme de la reine vient d’être découverte à Dion>>]. Cf. Elizabeth D. Carney in Alexander’s Empire: Formulation to Decay, A

Companion  to Crossroads of History, eds. W. Heckel, L. Tritle and P. Wheatley [Regina Books. Claremont, CA, 2007] 33, note 20.

Sirras may be mentioned in IG I3, No. 89, line 70: hi[………] =hI[rraw …..]?  Cf. herein, Makedonis XI: Perdikkas B’ and Makedonis XIV: Makedonika Glwssika, under IG I3, No. 89, line 70.

9-9th-2003: Cf. Daniel Ogden, Polygamy, Prostitutes and  Death. The Hellenistic Dynasties (Duckworth 1999) 9 and 12-13, where there is no mention of Kapetanopoulos’ article and original arguments concerning the Makedonian identity of Sirras and Eurydike, as well as Leonnatos’ relation to Sirras and Eurydike [Ogden’s book came to the attention of this writer through SEG 49, No. 839 (24-8-03) and a copy of it was seen on 9-9th-03].

Elias’ Publications (EliasPbl.htm herein), No. 48.

TELA, a city in Elimeia, Makedonia, it seems. The form TELA rather than DETELA, if

correct, is undoubtedly genitive masculine), with a nominative O TELAS. The inscription involved is discussed by P. Nigdeles in TEKMHRIA A' (1995) 173-179, No. 1, with photograph [last plate, P. Nigdeles]. From the photograph one could read POLEVSDE v TELA, but there is some irregularity in the lettering.
