If you plan to become a secondary History/Social Studies teacher, you should let your History Department adviser know as early as possible in your academic career. The total requirement is 130 credits. Even if you took an average of more than 13 credits each semester it would take you five years to complete the degree. Clearly, the earlier you take the correct sequence of classes the better.

WHAT DEGREES ARE AVAILABLE?

There are two degrees available, and both lead to the same State of Connecticut certification in History & Social Studies, 7-12 (state endorsement code 026). You may be either a BSEd in History major or a BSEd in Social Science major. Be sure your adviser is assisting you in completing the correct advising form.

WHAT IS THE PROFESSIONAL PROGRAM?

The “Professional Program” is the stage of your academic career when you can begin to take Education classes. Typically, students pursue the degree by taking general education, History, and Social Science classes until they have completed approximately 60-70 credits. At that point, it is appropriate to talk with your adviser about the timing of applying to the Professional Program. You cannot take any Education classes until after your acceptance into the Professional Program.

The State of Connecticut requires that students be admitted to programs in teacher education only after they have met certain criteria. Admission to CCSU and pursuit of a BSEd program does not guarantee admission to the Professional Program. There is a lot of preparation involved in submitting a successful Professional Program application, so again, the earlier you start the better your chances of meeting the deadlines. The Professional Program application deadlines are usually 10 September and 10 February. Applications are available online and in the School of Education in Barnard Hall.

AFTER ACCEPTANCE

If you are accepted into the Professional Program the Social Studies Coordinator becomes your adviser and you can begin to take Education classes.

You will take a sequence of courses that will take no less than three semesters and will include theoretical and field experience-based classes.

Important advising and student teaching information is available on the Professional Program Advising page.

QUESTIONS? Please talk to your assigned adviser early and often about any questions you may have about the program and your progress.
