Overview for the B.A. and B.S. in History Degrees

All students in these three degrees complete the same 39 credits of work in the Department as follows. Please note that all history majors are required to complete 12 credits at the 400-level.

Introductory Courses

 
HIST 261 & HIST 262
(History of American Life I & II)
6 cr.
Either HIST 121
(World Civ I) or HIST 142 (Western Civ I)
3 cr.
Either HIST 122
(World Civ II) or HIST 143 (Western Civ II)
3 cr.
Either HIST 301 (The Historical Imagination) or HIST 310 (Communities in America)3 cr.
 

Primary Area of Concentration

Four courses in one field of concentration12 cr.
 

Secondary Area of Concentration

Two courses in one field of concentration6 cr.
 

Electives

3 cr.
One history course in any field with the following provision. All programs in history are required to have at least one non-Western course that is certified by the State of Connecticut. If neither your Primary nor your Secondary Area of Concentration includes a non-Western course, you must use your elective for this purpose. The elective must be at the 200-level or above. 
 

Capstone

HIST 490 (Senior Seminar)3 cr.
** Please note that students may count one HIST 100 (Search in History) course within their program.
 

Additional information:

  • Students completing the B.A. in History must also complete a minor, typically 18 or 21 credits, in another field
  • Students following the B.S. in History degrees, for elementary or secondary education, must apply for admission to the professional education program. Elementary education candidates must take the courses marked with an * on their advising forms prior to application. Secondary education candidates should review the History/Social Sciences Certification page for more information.
