Important Change to Elementary Education Certification
Requirements (effective July 1, 2009)

November 12, 2008

From Dr. Anne Pautz, Assistant Dean, School of Education and Professional Studies:

"The State Department of Education has added a new Foundations of Reading test to be required for Elementary and Early Childhood certification after July 1, 2009. The test is intended to assess the Elementary Education teacher candidate’s knowledge of reading pedagogy. It is in addition to the two Praxis II tests candidates currently complete.

Elementary Education candidates who are graduating or completing in May 2009 will not be affected by this test so long as they pass Praxis II and apply for certification to my office by May 31, 2009. I will complete their certification application and coordinate with the State Department of Education to have them certified under the current testing requirements.

Elementary Education candidates applying for certification to the State Department of Education July 1 2009 or later will have to pass the new test in addition to the Praxis II tests. Since the new test is NOT a Praxis test, it will have its own fees and testing sites."
